Liebherr has been selected to supply an LS-C 60 ship crane for Mareva Nui II, a new multipurpose cargo and passenger vessel being built for operations in French Polynesia’s Tuamotu archipelago.

The vessel is under construction at Hong Ha Shipyard in Vietnam as part of a turnkey project managed by Dutch shipbuilding and maritime consultancy company Handelskade. The company’s scope covers engineering, construction, equipment procurement and commissioning.

Mareva Nui II will be operated by TMTO, a wholly owned subsidiary of SNP, an existing Liebherr customer. TMTO provides cargo transport and passenger connections between islands across the Tuamotu archipelago.

The vessel is designed to accommodate both freight and passengers, incorporating tween decks, folding hatch covers and dedicated passenger accommodation. Its configuration allows different types of cargo to be carried alongside passenger services.

The LS-C 60 crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 40 tonnes and a minimum working radius of 3 m, allowing cargo to be handled within the vessel’s available storage areas.

According to Liebherr, the crane’s compact footprint and low centre of gravity were key considerations in its selection, helping preserve deck space while supporting vessel stability.

The cylinder-luffing mechanism limits the number of wire ropes and sheaves, reducing mechanical complexity and maintenance requirements. The design is intended to support cargo-handling operations aboard the multipurpose vessel.

The equipment forms part of Liebherr’s ship crane range, which includes cranes used for cargo handling on specialised transport vessels.

Mareva Nui II is approaching completion, although Liebherr has not disclosed a specific delivery date.
