Equinor and its partners have made a gas discovery at Gullfaks South in the Norwegian North Sea, with recoverable resources estimated at 3.3 million to 10.3 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe).

The discovery was made through well 34/10-D-4 BH, an exploration sidetrack drilled during work on a production well using the Askeladden drilling rig.

Located approximately 190 km northwest of Bergen, the discovery is estimated to contain between 0.5 million and 1.6 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalent, corresponding to the reported 3.3 million to 10.3 million boe.

Gunnar Egge, Equinor’s vice president for the Gullfaks field, said the discovery shows how relatively small, cost-effective exploration wells can add recoverable resources. He said the additional volumes could help sustain activity and production at Gullfaks.

According to Equinor’s official announcement on 8 October 2026, the gas was found within the existing Gullfaks production licence, which is held by Equinor, Petoro and OMV.
