Samsung Heavy Industries has presented a standardized FLNG platform for Canada, seeking to simplify design work for prospective LNG developments. The design was discussed at the Canada FLNG Technical Forum in Vancouver on 23 October 2026.

SHI organised the event with KOTRA Vancouver. Around 100 participants attended, drawn from resource development businesses, First Nations communities, government bodies and financial institutions.

The proposed approach uses a common platform that can be adapted to individual project needs. SHI said this would limit the need to repeat engineering tasks for each development, with the aim of shortening schedules and making more efficient use of investment.

Cedar FLNG was presented as a Canadian application of the shipbuilder’s technology. SHI received the construction award in 2024, and the facility was launched in June 2026. The company’s official launch announcement recorded a launch weight of approximately 50,000 tonnes.

The facility is intended for waters off Kitimat in British Columbia. A pipeline from shore will supply gas for liquefaction aboard the unit, which will also store LNG and load it onto export carriers.

SHI said its platform draws on experience from securing seven of the 11 newbuild FLNG orders awarded globally.

Discussions at the Vancouver forum covered both project development and financing. Developers shared their experience, while financial institutions outlined possible funding support. SHI also explored cooperation with local stakeholders on permitting, gas supplies, infrastructure and First Nations participation.

Wang-Keun Lee, executive vice president and head of SHI’s Shipbuilding & Offshore Business Division, said the company aims to support Canadian LNG development through its technology and solutions adapted to each project. SHI plans to work with local partners from the early development stages, extending its involvement beyond engineering, procurement and construction.
