HD Hyundai and Kiewit plan to establish HD Kiewit Shipbuilding LLC to develop a US shipyard. The partners aim to start construction in 2027 and bring the facility into full operation in 2029.

HD Hyundai USA LLC and Kiewit Maritime Co. outlined the project in their joint venture announcement on 22 October 2026. Kiewit Maritime is an affiliate of Kiewit Offshore Services. The initiative follows a strategic partnership the companies agreed in July.

Naval auxiliary vessels and commercial ships are among the markets the venture intends to pursue. It would also examine opportunities to produce vessel blocks and modules for other American shipbuilders. The partners plan to cooperate on maritime infrastructure as well.

The project envisages a newly built yard at a location already in industrial use, offering deepwater access and an unrestricted route to the Gulf. HD Hyundai would provide its shipbuilding expertise and experience in running yards. Kiewit would contribute its fabrication and construction capabilities.

The production plan includes HD Hyundai’s Future of Shipyard model, with digital twins, automated manufacturing and robotic welding. The companies aim to use these systems to raise productivity, improve quality and make construction work safer.

According to the joint announcement, employment could reach up to 3,000 once the facility achieves its planned operating scale. The partners also intend to train technical personnel and develop the workforce, alongside efforts to strengthen American supply networks for marine equipment and logistics services.
