Jan De Nul Completes 23 Foundations for Princess Elisabeth Island

Jan De Nul has completed the installation of all 23 concrete caissons forming the foundations of Princess Elisabeth Island, 45 km off the Belgian coast.

The artificial energy island is being developed by Elia Group, while construction is being carried out by TM Edison, a consortium comprising DEME and Jan De Nul.

Offshore installation of the caissons began in April 2025. Each structure weighs about 22,000 tonnes and measures 58 m long and 28 m wide. Their height ranges from 23 m to 32 m depending on whether a storm wall is included. The caissons were built in Vlissingen.

Following completion of the foundation perimeter, the next phase will involve reclaiming sand inside the caissons over the coming months.

Cable connections between the island and the mainland are scheduled for 2027 and 2028. Installation of electrical infrastructure on Princess Elisabeth Island is expected to begin in 2029.

The island is scheduled for completion in 2031. It will transfer at least 2.1 GW of offshore wind power from the Princess Elisabeth Zone to shore and is designed to combine direct-current HVDC and alternating-current HVAC connections.
