South Korea’s PanStar Acro was scheduled to leave Busan on 22 August 2026 for Europe via the Northern Sea Route, marking the country’s first commercial voyage on the Arctic route and testing its viability for cargo shipping.
The 2,758 TEU container ship, operated by PanStar, had secured 837 TEU of cargo for the government-backed voyage. The load included auto parts and chemical products, along with about 100 empty containers.
The planned route would take PanStar Acro north along Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula before crossing the Bering Sea and entering the Northern Sea Route. The ship was due to call at Felixstowe in Britain, Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Gdansk in Poland before returning. The voyage was expected to take 40 to 45 days.
South Korean authorities estimate that an Arctic route between Busan and Europe could reduce voyage times by 35% compared with shipping through the Suez Canal.
President Lee Jae Myung has made Arctic shipping a priority for South Korea. Officials said the initiative could help develop Busan as a global maritime hub and position the Arctic as a regular trade route by 2030.
The project could also create friction with Western allies seeking to keep Russia isolated during the war in Ukraine. Seoul consulted Moscow about the voyage, including possible assistance if the vessel encountered problems such as becoming trapped in ice. South Korea’s Oceans Ministry and Russia’s Foreign Ministry did not respond to requests for comment.
Use of the Northern Sea Route has increased in recent years. Data from Norway’s Centre for High North Logistics showed that 88 vessels made 103 transits in 2025, compared with 97 transits in 2024 and 43 in 2022. Most of the traffic came from countries including Russia and China.
Scientists say declining Arctic ice has made northern passages easier to navigate, while increased shipping contributes to global warming.
A South Korean government official said PanStar Acro was scheduled to depart at around 8 p.m. on 22 August 2026, depending on cargo loading and other preparations.
