Fred. Olsen 1848 has received third-party verification from DNV for its BRIZO floating solar PV technology after an independent technical review.

The review was carried out under DNV-RP-0584 and confirmed key technical aspects of BRIZO. Fred. Olsen 1848 said the verification supports the technology’s readiness for project deployment.

DNV reviewed design methods, hydrodynamic load assessment based on physical model testing, structural behavior and testing procedures. The assessment provides a technical basis for the continued development of the floating solar system.

BRIZO is designed for more exposed conditions than conventional floating solar systems. It uses a flexible rope-mesh and tensioning system and is engineered to manage waves up to 3.5 m HS.

The technology is intended for nearshore sites and wave-prone inland water environments. Fred. Olsen 1848 said the verification also supports BRIZO’s bankability and commercial deployment at scale.

Floating solar projects have often been limited to calm or sheltered waters. BRIZO is intended to expand deployment options by allowing floating solar installations in more challenging water environments.

The company said technologies that can operate across a wider range of water environments could help address constraints related to land availability, permitting and grid access as solar photovoltaic deployment continues to grow.
