USCGC Storis, the US Coast Guard’s newest polar icebreaker, has returned to its temporary homeport in Seattle after a 36-day deployment in the Bering Sea.

The patrol focused on improving operational readiness, strengthening cooperation with other military assets and testing new operating concepts for long missions in a remote and demanding maritime area.

The US Coast Guard acquired and commissioned USCGC Storis in 2025. It is the service’s first polar icebreaker to enter service in more than two decades.

During the deployment, the cutter carried out an ice assessment to measure its performance across different Arctic conditions. The crew tested the vessel’s icebreaking capability and collected data that will serve as a baseline for future operations by US and allied vessels in high-latitude waters.

The Coast Guard said the assessment and related exercises form part of the crew’s preparation for the cutter’s scheduled summer deployment. It also said the mission supports efforts to protect US maritime borders, sovereignty and natural resources as international attention on the Arctic increases.

A February–March hospital ship mission to Greenland would face peak sea ice, scarce icebreaker escorts, and shallow ports such as Nuuk at roughly 10.5 m. Offshore anchoring and ship availability add further constraints.
Davie Defense was awarded a USCG contract to build five Arctic Security Cutters. Two will be built in Finland to support first delivery in 2028, with three planned at Galveston and Port Arthur, Texas.
