Vestas has completed the conformity assessment process for its V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine, which is planned for the Katagami Offshore Wind Project in Akita Prefecture, Japan.
The certification applies to the turbine and associated facilities for the project. According to Vestas, the assessment confirmed compliance with Japan’s technical standards, including requirements related to seismic resilience, typhoon conditions and marine environments.
The company said the certification is Japan’s first conformity certification for an offshore wind turbine above 10 MW. It is also the first certification for a fixed-bottom offshore wind project in general sea areas selected through a public tender.
The Katagami Offshore Wind Project was also the first offshore wind project certified by Bureau Veritas Japan, according to Vestas.
The process validated the Japan-specific design of the V236-15.0 MW turbine for operating conditions in the country.
Vestas said the certification was completed with support from project partners, including Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy LLC and Kajima Corporation.
Offshore installation of the turbine is planned to begin in August 2027.
