Maersk Offshore Wind has officially christened Maersk Viridis, the maiden vessel in its future-ready fleet.
The naming ceremony was held on the vessel’s main deck, an unusual setting for the event. Charlotte Nørkjær Larsen, the vessel’s godmother, formally named the ship by smashing a bottle of champagne against the main crane pedestal.
After the ceremony, the captain and crew led guided tours around the approximately 40,000 tonnes vessel. Guests were given close access to the ship, described by the company as the first Wind Turbine Installation Vessel of this style, scale and design.
The name “Viridis” comes from Latin for “green” and was chosen to reflect the vessel’s role in supporting the transition to renewable and sustainable energy sources.
Maersk Offshore Wind also thanked guests, friends, collaborators and partners for marking the milestone, and thanked Seatrium for building the vessel. The company said resilience, perseverance and passion had been hallmarks of the project from start to finish.
With the ceremony completed, Maersk Viridis is preparing to sail to the U.S. under the captain and crew, ready to carry out the work it was designed for in offshore wind operations with safer, more efficient execution.
