Hanwha Power Systems has obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping for its ammonia-fueled gas turbine retrofit solution targeting 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers. The announcement was made during the Gastech 2025 exhibition in Milan.
The approval follows a joint development initiative launched with ABS in August 2025 and validates the engineering design and safety review carried out in a compressed timeline. The system is designed to operate entirely on ammonia without the use of pilot oil, offering a pathway to zero-carbon propulsion.
The AiP was granted after a comprehensive assessment of engineering documentation, including process flow diagrams, machinery arrangements, fire safety systems, and hazard identification reports. It confirms compliance with international safety standards for ammonia-fueled ships.
With this recognition, Hanwha Power Systems is positioned to propose retrofit packages that enable existing LNG carriers and other ship types to transition to ammonia fuel. The company intends to expand partnerships with shipowners, shipyards, and classification societies to accelerate commercialization.

At Gastech 2025, held September 9–12 at Fiera Milano, the company is also showcasing FSRU modification technology, nitrogen removal systems, and CO₂ compressors for carbon capture and storage, highlighting its role in advancing maritime decarbonization.
