The German EMS Group hosted a naming ceremony for its latest newbuilding, EMS Luna, at the company’s headquarters in Leer, marking another step in the rollout of up to ten new vessels in the series.
Constructed at the KTU Shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, the EMS Luna is designed as a multipurpose general cargo vessel suitable for bulk, breakbulk, and project cargo operations in European short-sea service.
During the ceremony, a bottle of champagne was broken against the hull at the Port of Leer, with numerous international guests in attendance. The event coincided with Leer’s traditional maritime fair, Gallimarkt, adding a festive local dimension.
Ten-year-old Fenna, daughter of longtime EMS Group employee Heika Iwwerks, served as godmother to the new ship. She offered a blessing for “smooth sailing” and safe passage. The mayor of Leer, Claus-Peter Horst, also delivered congratulatory remarks and welcomed the strengthened maritime presence in the city.
EMS Group CEO Andreas Bergmann described the naming ceremony as a major milestone along the firm’s growth trajectory. “With our versatile and sustainable coasters, we are strengthening our presence in the short-sea market and can provide our customers with more flexible, tailor-made transport solutions,” he remarked.
The EMS Luna has completed its maiden voyage from Asia to Europe. It carries a Green Star 3 Class Notation, reflecting elevated standards of environmental performance.
Key specifications of the vessel include:
- Loading capacity: 4,700 tons
- Length (overall): 93.50 m
- Beam (width): 14.40 m
- Propulsion: Hanshin main engine (1,176 kW) and Baudouin auxiliary engines
- Flag: Antigua & Barbuda
EMS Group’s fleet already includes eleven modern general cargo vessels, among them four sister ships also built at KTU Shipyard. Ownership, technical management, chartering, and crewing operations of the EMS Luna are handled within the group through EMS Chartering, EMS Shipmanagement, and EMS Crewing—each operating under the EMS umbrella.
