On September 17, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) held the launching ceremony for the Republic of Korea Navy’s newest Aegis destroyer, Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, at its Ulsan shipyard.
The vessel, stretching 170 meters in length with a beam of 21 meters, carries a displacement of 8,200 tons and can reach speeds up to 30 knots. Designed with cutting-edge capabilities, it integrates the U.S.-developed Aegis Combat System, a sophisticated sonar suite, and enhanced interceptor systems, making it the most powerful destroyer of its class worldwide.
The project underscores strong defense cooperation between South Korea and the United States, as it combines American combat technology with Korean shipbuilding expertise. Delivery of the warship to the Republic of Korea Navy is planned for next year.
