Heerema Marine Contractors is setting up a new engineering hub in Porto, Portugal, through Heerema Portugal Lda., adding technical capacity for offshore wind, marine infrastructure and decommissioning work.
The Porto operation will become part of Heerema’s international engineering network, alongside its headquarters in Leiden and offices in London, Houston, Singapore and Villahermosa.
Its engineers will support both the company’s heavy lift fleet and offshore projects at different stages of development and execution. The work will cover tender activities, engineering and offshore installation planning.
For offshore wind projects, the Porto team will contribute to engineering for monopile foundation and offshore substation installation. It will also provide technical support for large offshore structures and for projects involving the removal of end-of-life oil and gas infrastructure.
Heerema Marine Contractors operates heavy lift crane vessels used for offshore transportation, installation and removal work. Its project activities include offshore wind, conventional energy infrastructure and decommissioning.
The company is initially recruiting Technical Project Managers, Installation Engineers, Structural Engineers, Technical Draughtsmen and Human Resources professionals for the Porto operation.
Eight senior Heerema specialists from Leiden and Houston will also join the new location during its initial phase. Their deployment will connect the Porto team with Heerema’s established engineering organisation.
Marcel de Nooijer, CEO of Heerema Marine Contractors, said the company had selected Porto for its technology environment, universities and engineering talent. He also described the new office as a structural investment rather than a temporary base linked to one contract.
Claudio Gentile, General Manager of Heerema Porto, said the new operation would add engineering capacity and bring Portuguese engineers into Heerema’s multinational teams.
The Porto team will contribute from early tender and concept work through installation engineering and project execution. The location is being added to Heerema’s existing engineering network rather than being established as a separate regional operation.
