The BP-led Shah Deniz consortium has awarded Emerson a contract to provide automation and control systems for the Shah Deniz Compression (SDC) project in the Caspian Sea.
The contract covers systems required for remote operation of the electrically powered, normally unattended SDC platform. Emerson will supply integrated technology for process control, safety shutdown, fire and gas detection, and power management.
The Shah Deniz consortium consists of BP, the operator with a 29.99% interest, Lukoil with 19.99%, TPAO with 19.00%, Southern Gas Corridor Upstream/SGC with 16.02%, NICO with 10.00%, and MVM with 5.00%.
The $2.9 billion Shah Deniz Compression project includes a new compression facility designed to support gas production from the Shah Deniz field. According to BP, the project has reached around 30% completion, with approximately 2,700 people currently mobilized.
The SDC platform will be installed in 85 m of water, about 3 km from the existing Shah Deniz Bravo (SDB) platform.
Four 11-MW compressors will be installed on the SDC platform. Gas from the Shah Deniz Alpha (SDA) and Shah Deniz Bravo (SDB) platforms will be compressed at the new facility before being sent to the Sangachal terminal onshore.
The project is expected to enable around 50 billion cubic metres of additional gas and approximately 25 million barrels of additional condensate production and export from the Shah Deniz field.
Other work includes associated offshore facilities in the Shah Deniz contract area and brownfield modifications at Shah Deniz Alpha, Shah Deniz Bravo and the Sangachal terminal.
Construction is underway, with completion expected in 2029. The SDC facility is expected to receive first gas for compression from Shah Deniz Alpha in 2029, followed by Shah Deniz Bravo in 2030.
