Samsung Heavy Industries has launched the Cedar FLNG, a floating LNG facility scheduled for deployment off Kitimat in British Columbia, Canada.
The facility will liquefy, store and offload natural gas supplied from shore. Its hull is about 2.5 times larger than a football field, while its launch weight is around 50,000 tonnes.
Following the launch, Samsung Heavy Industries will carry out topside module fabrication and installation, as well as LNG cargo tank work. The company plans to complete commissioning and deliver the unit in the first half of 2028.
The launch comes as Samsung Heavy Industries is building three major FLNG units at its Geoje shipyard at the same time. The projects are Cedar FLNG for Canada, PETRONAS’ ZLNG for Malaysia and Eni S.p.A.’s Coral North FLNG for Italy.
According to the company, this is the world’s first case in which large FLNG units have been launched from one shipyard while three units are being built simultaneously. Samsung Heavy Industries also secured an additional order on the 2nd for Delfin Midstream’s FLNG project, planned for offshore Louisiana in the United States.
Samsung Heavy Industries said the launch of Cedar FLNG and the simultaneous construction of three FLNG units reflect its smart shipyard innovation. The company said it will continue advancing its smart yard capabilities to respond to growing FLNG production demand.
