Wasaline has moved its Vaasa–Umeå ferry service to 100% bio-LNG, supplied by Nordic energy company Gasum, creating what the partners describe as the first completely carbon-neutral shipping route on the Baltic Sea. The change applies to the hybrid Ro-Pax Aurora Botnia, which sails daily between Finland and Sweden and is certified to carry up to 935 passengers.

The carbon-neutral claim is achieved through a combination of waste-based bio-LNG and the FuelEU Maritime pooling mechanism in cooperation with Stena Line. Running Aurora Botnia on bio-LNG generates regulatory over-compliance that can be pooled within the FuelEU framework. Because LNG and bio-LNG are fully drop-in compatible, the vessel required no hardware modifications for the switch.

Wasaline had previously targeted 2030 for carbon neutrality but says the Vaasa–Umeå corridor has reached that milestone early under this fuel and compliance model.
