Taihan Cable & Solution is preparing Skandi Connector for its first deployment following the vessel’s acquisition, with submarine cable burial work scheduled at the Yeonggwang Nakwol Offshore Wind Project in August.
Taihan held a safe operation ceremony for Skandi Connector at Orient Shipyard in Gamcheon Port, Busan, on 12 August. The company announced the event on 13 August.
The 11,000-tonne-class cable-laying vessel was acquired by Taihan in May and delivered in July. Since its arrival in Korea, preparations have included vessel inspections, equipment maintenance and the establishment of an operating crew.
At the Yeonggwang Nakwol project, Skandi Connector will carry out burial operations on submarine cables that have already been laid. A trencher deployed from the vessel will bury the cables to a specified depth below the seabed.
The burial work is intended to protect the cables from external factors including fishing gear and vessel anchors.
The ceremony was attended by Jong-min Song, Vice Chairman of Taihan; Dae-heon Kim, President and Chief Planning Officer of Hoban Group; and Min-sung Kim, Vice President of Hoban Group. Attendees also reviewed the vessel’s main facilities, equipment and operating systems ahead of deployment.
Following the Yeonggwang Nakwol project, Taihan plans to deploy Skandi Connector on other submarine cable projects in Korea and overseas.
The vessel will operate alongside Taihan’s existing cable-laying vessel PALOS. The two-vessel system is intended to allow each vessel to be deployed according to project scale and installation requirements, supporting submarine cable manufacturing, transportation, laying and burial within Taihan’s turnkey execution scope.
