Samsung Heavy Industries and Sargent & Lundy will jointly develop a standardised floating small modular reactor platform under a newly signed memorandum of understanding.
The cooperation will cover plant standardisation, regulatory approvals, marine deployment strategies and preparations for entering the US market.
The platform will be designed to accommodate different reactor technologies rather than a single reactor design. This technology-agnostic approach is intended to give utilities, governments and other customers greater flexibility when selecting reactors for floating power projects.
The agreement takes the programme beyond the conceptual design completed in 2025. The next stage will focus on licensing, construction planning and commercial deployment.
Samsung Heavy Industries will provide offshore engineering, procurement and construction experience. Sargent & Lundy will contribute nuclear plant design and licensing expertise built over more than seven decades.
