Net Zero Atlantic has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Carbon Trust, France Énergies Marines and Germany’s Stiftung OFFSHORE-WINDENERGIE to support offshore wind development in Atlantic Canada.
The agreement was signed during WindEnergy Hamburg 2026 on 25 September 2026 and will focus on sharing experience from European and Canadian offshore wind markets, according to the Carbon Trust.
Potential areas of cooperation include wind resource assessment, environmental and permitting matters, transmission and grid interconnection, subsea cabling, marine surveys and energy-system modelling. Stiftung OFFSHORE-WINDENERGIE said the cooperation could also cover port infrastructure, supply chains and maritime spatial planning.
The agreement expands an existing partnership between Net Zero Atlantic and the Carbon Trust, which signed an earlier MoU on 5 May 2026 covering Nova Scotia’s offshore wind sector and market development.
The cooperation comes as Canada advances its Wind West initiative. According to the Government of Canada, the programme is intended to support offshore wind development in Atlantic Canada and connect new generation to electricity markets through additional transmission infrastructure. Its first phase envisages 5,000 MW of offshore wind development.
Net Zero Atlantic is also leading the Atlantic Canada Offshore Wind Integration and Transmission Study, supported by Natural Resources Canada. The study is assessing grid constraints, transmission investment requirements and the technical implications of integrating large-scale offshore wind generation into the Atlantic electricity system.
