Iberdrola has begun construction of its Windanker offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, following the successful installation of the project’s first monopile. The development marks Iberdrola’s third large-scale offshore wind project in the region, after Wikinger and Baltic Eagle, reinforcing its Baltic Hub presence.
The monopiles, measuring up to 84 meters in length and weighing approximately 2,100 tons, are being manufactured by Navantia, S.A., S.M.E. and Windar Renovables. Installation is being carried out by Van Oord, deploying the heavy-lift vessel Svanen.
Felipe Montero, CEO of Iberdrola Germany, emphasized the project’s dual role in both advancing Germany’s energy transition and fostering industrial cooperation:
“With Windanker, we are realizing the third major project of our Baltic Hub. The wind farm is not only a sustainable investment in Germany’s transformation, it also introduces advanced offshore technology to the Baltic Sea, creates regional value, and strengthens ties between German and Spanish industry.”
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, Windanker will deliver 315 MW of clean energy, enough to power around 315,000 households. The project represents a significant step toward expanding renewable generation capacity in the Baltic region.
