Damen Shiprepair Brest has welcomed the 340-metre cruise ship Disney Fantasy into its 420 x 80-metre drydock, marking the start of a comprehensive retrofit program aimed at lowering fuel consumption and emissions.

In the coming weeks, the vessel will be fitted with a newly manufactured bulbous bow, produced at Damen’s on-site workshop. The redesigned bow is expected to reduce drag in the water, enabling more efficient operations and cutting overall fuel use.

The project also includes the application of a new silicon-based paint and anti-fouling system, a coating technology already proven on more than 5,000 vessels worldwide. The coating is designed to minimise biofouling even during idle periods or slow steaming, further enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

In addition, Damen will carry out scheduled maintenance on Disney Fantasy’s propulsion systems, stabilisers, and steering gear, ensuring that the vessel remains in prime operating condition for the next five years.

According to Damen, the retrofit underlines the company’s commitment to supporting more sustainable cruise operations, enabling operators like Disney Cruise Line to reduce environmental impact while maintaining performance standards.
