Valencia, Spain – October 2025 — Marine battery technology company AYK Energy has announced a major milestone in sustainable marine propulsion with the supply of high-capacity battery systems for Baleària’s first fully electric high-speed ferries, currently under construction in Spain.
The two new vessels will operate entirely on electric propulsion on the 18-mile route between Tarifa, Spain and Tangier, Morocco, reaching speeds of up to 26 knots. Each vessel will have a capacity for 225 vehicles and 804 passengers, representing one of the most ambitious electric ferry programs in southern Europe.
Each ferry will be equipped with 13.8 MWh of lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries distributed across four propulsion units. The system will allow fully emission-free operation, while a robotic shore-connection arm will enable rapid charging in under 40 minutes at both ports.
The use of LFP battery technology offers increased thermal stability, safety, and lifecycle performance compared to nickel-based chemistries, making it ideal for high-demand maritime applications.
The project has been described by industry executives as “a technological milestone that defines the future of intercontinental sustainable transport.” Baleària aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint while improving passenger comfort through lower vibration and noise levels.
Construction is being handled by a Spanish shipyard specializing in aluminum high-speed vessels, with delivery expected in 2026. Once in operation, the ferries will represent one of the first fully electric links between Europe and Africa, setting a new standard for clean maritime mobility.
