Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), MTI, and Grid Co., Ltd. have jointly developed and deployed an AI-based system that streamlines and optimizes allocation planning for NYK’s car carrier fleet. Full-scale operations began in July 2025.
The system leverages artificial intelligence to evaluate millions of route combinations and generate optimal shipping plans within ten minutes. It incorporates variables such as customer demand, vessel maintenance schedules, and port congestion, enabling improved fleet utilization, cost efficiency, and transport performance.
Crucially, the platform also factors in next-generation fuel use and carbon pricing, supporting greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction alongside economic optimization. This innovation aligns with NYK’s commitment to sustainable logistics and operational efficiency.
NYK operates the world’s largest car carrier fleet, exceeding 100 vessels. Traditionally, allocation planning required significant manual effort to assess complex voyage conditions months in advance. The new AI solution reduces this burden and enhances planning accuracy.
The three companies stated they will continue collaborating to refine digital solutions that balance efficiency with environmental responsibility, contributing to the long-term sustainability of global shipping.
