TotalEnergies, SOCAR and XRG have taken the final investment decision for the full-field development of the Absheron gas and condensate field in Azerbaijan’s sector of the Caspian Sea.

TotalEnergies will operate the development with a 35% interest, while SOCAR holds 35% and XRG 30%. According to Azerbaijan’s presidential office, the FID document was exchanged at the Second Azerbaijan International Investment Forum in Baku on 26 September 2026.

The project is expected to increase total Absheron production capacity to 6 billion cubic meters of gas per year and 47,000 barrels per day of condensate, with start-up targeted for 2029. The field’s first development phase began production in 2023 with capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year and 12,000 barrels per day of condensate.

Four subsea production wells are planned for the expansion, with the wellstream sent ashore for treatment at a new electrically powered processing facility. TotalEnergies expects Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity from the development to remain below 4 kg CO2e/boe.

Absheron is located around 100 km southeast of Baku and contains approximately 140 billion cubic meters of recoverable gas reserves. XRG separately said the expansion would provide access to up to 5 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas resources.

The additional gas is intended for domestic consumption in Azerbaijan as well as exports to Türkiye using existing export infrastructure.
