Lloyd’s Register has appointed Jens Grunenberg as Senior Representative for Germany, with the new role taking effect on 1 September.
Grunenberg will be based in Hamburg and will continue as Germany Commercial Manager, a position he has held since joining Lloyd’s Register in July 2026. He will also join the Hamburg management team and represent the classification society across the German market.
His responsibilities will include engagement with shipowners, operators and other maritime companies as they address regulatory requirements, vessel upgrades, fuel choices and efficiency measures.
Before joining Lloyd’s Register, Grunenberg was Fleet Technical Director at Royal Caribbean Group, where his work included marine technical fleet operations for the TUI Cruises fleet.
His maritime career spans more than 15 years and includes both seagoing and shoreside positions. After training as a marine engineer at the Maritime School in Cuxhaven, he began his career in container shipping.
Grunenberg later worked with AIDA Cruises, Deutsche Fischfang Union and TUI Cruises, moving from marine engineer and chief engineer positions into superintendent, ship management and fleet leadership roles.
He said his experience in shipboard engineering and shore-based fleet management gives him a practical understanding of the operational and commercial issues faced by shipping companies.
The appointment comes as German operators consider decisions involving alternative fuels, retrofits, vessel performance and compliance with changing regulations. Lloyd’s Register has also stressed the importance of maintaining local technical expertise and direct customer relationships in Germany.
Grunenberg has highlighted the value of direct contact between classification organisations and shipping companies even as digital communication becomes more common across the maritime sector.
His appointment also coincides with SMM in Hamburg, which runs from 1 to 4 September. Grunenberg and other Lloyd’s Register representatives are taking part in discussions with maritime companies and technology providers on vessel performance, decarbonisation, energy efficiency and fleet technology.
As Senior Representative, Grunenberg will focus on representing Lloyd’s Register in Germany and strengthening its relationships with maritime businesses in the country.
