Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure have brought the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm into commercial operation in the German North Sea.
The project consists of 83 wind turbines rated at 11 MW each. Located around 72 km off the German coast, the wind farm occupies an area of approximately 75 km².
Borkum Riffgrund 3 is jointly owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure. It is the sixth offshore wind farm operated by Ørsted in Germany, following the 253 MW Gode Wind 3 project, which was commissioned in early 2025 and is also jointly owned by the two companies.
A total of 786 MW of Borkum Riffgrund 3’s output is covered by long-term corporate power purchase agreements with industrial, retail and technology customers.
The contracted capacity includes 350 MW for Amazon, 186 MW for BASF, 100 MW for Covestro, 100 MW for Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft/REWE Group, and 50 MW for Google. The agreements run for periods ranging from 10 to 25 years.
The wind farm is also part of Ørsted’s 8.1 GW offshore wind construction programme. Once the programme is completed, the company expects its installed offshore wind capacity to exceed 18 GW.
Equipment and services for Borkum Riffgrund 3 were sourced from several European countries. Wind turbines and foundations came from Germany and Denmark, while cables were supplied from Germany and France. Installation vessels were provided from the Netherlands and Belgium.
Around 100 German companies were contracted during construction of the project.
With Borkum Riffgrund 3 now operating, Ørsted’s installed offshore wind capacity in Germany has increased to around 2.5 GW. According to the company, this is equivalent to supplying approximately 2.5 million households with renewable electricity.
Operational and maintenance activities for Borkum Riffgrund 3 and Ørsted’s other German offshore wind assets are based in Norden-Norddeich and Emden in Lower Saxony.
