COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers completed the dynamic positioning float-over installation of the Yangjiang Sanshandao 2GW offshore HVDC station on 23 July 2026.
The company used its 65,000 DWT semi-submersible vessel Xiang Tai Kou for the operation, which involved a total installation weight of nearly 30,000 tonnes, including ballast.
According to COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers, the project set a record for the heaviest DP float-over installation, including ballast.
The operation began at 7:12 a.m. local time. Xiang Tai Kou positioned the converter station inside the jacket structure using its dynamic positioning system. Load transfer was completed at 9:00 a.m., and the vessel departed the site at 9:40 a.m.
The Yangjiang Sanshandao HVDC station is a seven-storey steel structure weighing 25,200 t. Its footprint is comparable to a football field, while its height is equivalent to a 15-storey building.
The station forms the central offshore component of China’s first integrated offshore-onshore voltage source converter high-voltage direct current transmission project.
It is expected to supply approximately 6 billion kWh of electricity annually to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The project is also expected to save 1.74 million tonnes of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 4.63 million tonnes each year.
The installation followed the Qingzhou V & VII project completed in June 2026. COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers completed both 2GW offshore HVDC station installations within two months.
The Yangjiang Sanshandao project was the company’s 29th completed DP float-over installation.
