Ocean Winds has secured planning approval from Scottish ministers for the 2 GW Caledonia offshore wind farm in the Moray Firth.

The developer submitted separate applications for Caledonia North and Caledonia South in November 2024. Caledonia North will comprise 77 turbines, while Caledonia South will have 78 turbines.

The northern site will use fixed-bottom foundations. The approval for Caledonia South permits up to 39 floating wind turbines.

Water depths across the development range from 40 m to 100 m. Most of the fixed foundations are expected to use jacket structures of the same type deployed at the neighbouring 950 MW Moray East wind farm.

Caledonia is expected to connect to a new SSEN substation at Greens in Aberdeenshire. Offshore construction is scheduled to begin by 2030.

Aberdeenshire Council approved the onshore elements of the project in May.

Caledonia Project Director Mark Baxter said the approval followed years of work by the project team and engagement with stakeholders and local communities. He added that the Scottish Government’s decision would allow the project to proceed.
