Petronas has signed a memorandum of understanding with regional exploration and production operators and Universiti Teknologi Petronas to assess opportunities for improving oil recovery across offshore acreages.
The agreement was signed through Malaysia Petroleum Management and brings together Petronas, Petronas Carigali, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, PTTEP, and Pertamina. The parties will combine the operating experience and technical expertise of Petronas Carigali, PTTEP, and Pertamina with the research capabilities and laboratory facilities of Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
The collaboration will focus on fit-for-purpose oil recovery studies supported by laboratory testing. Selected technologies and concepts may be advanced toward pilot implementation as the parties assess practical recovery solutions for offshore basins.
Bacho Pilong, SVP of Malaysia Petroleum Management, said the initiative aims to integrate subsurface insights, high-performance computing, and operator capabilities to accelerate tailored solutions, unlock additional value from mature fields, and strengthen long-term energy resilience through cross-border cooperation.
The signatories also aim to speed up the deployment of innovative recovery methods, reinforce regional technical capabilities, and support sustainable resource development across offshore basins.
In parallel, Petronas, through Malaysia Petroleum Management, unveiled the Digital Intelligence Centre. The centre is intended to support a data-driven culture, advance digital innovation, and strengthen Malaysia’s upstream ecosystem while reinforcing Malaysia Petroleum Management’s role as the country’s upstream resource custodian.
